In May, former UFC heavyweight title challenger Alistair Overeem knocked out Walt Harris in the second-round of their UFC on ESPN contest. In July, the 40-year-old used social media to announce “One more title run.” On Saturday, MMA fans find out if Overeem can make good on that claim when he faces Augusto Sakai in the main event of the UFC on ESPN+ 34 fight card.
Overeem joined the UFC in December 2011. By that time he had runs as Strikeforce heavyweight champion and DREAM heavyweight champ. Overeem made some noise in his UFC debut when he stopped former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar in the first round.
Overeem went 6-3 in his first nine bouts in the UFC. His 10th UFC fight was a matchup opposite heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic. Miocic scored a first round TKO win. Since that loss, Overeem is 5-3. He hasn’t won more than two straight fights since that loss.
Overeem, who is ranked No. 6 in the official UFC heavyweight rankings, faces the No. 9 ranked Augusto Sakai at the top of Saturday’s UFC event.
Sakai, who had a 4-1-1 run in Bellator, is unbeaten since he signed with the UFC in 2018 following a win on a Dana White Contender Series card. Sakai, who is 29, is on a four-fight winning streak. He has two decision wins and two knockout wins during that stretch. Overeem represents a serious step up in competition for Sakai, who is coming off a split decision win over Blagoy Ivanov in May.
